CHATTANOOGA — The free Sunset Concert Series at the North River Civic Center begins on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. with Bill McCallie and band.
Bill McCallie, "Tennessee's Cowboy Poet," has performed on the stage of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry as well as annual performances at the National Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock, Texas. A regular at the Sherman Talent Round Up in Nevada, he has logged some 75 appearances on TV and hosts "The Cowboy Jubilee Show" on WSMC at 6 p.m. each Sunday here in Chattanooga.
Bill (photo, left) and his band "In Cahoots" are regular performers throughout the southeast. Their stage shows are filled with humor and acoustic, bluegrass, and western favorites. The band is made up of veteran entertainers Mike Parham and Keith Mahan, an old hand at lead and tenor harmony. His bass playing is outstanding. Parham ads 20 years of experience on the banjo, mandolin, and baratone harmony singing.
The band appears each Tuesday during the summer on the Southern Belle Riverboat as well as performances at the Chattanooga Choo Choo.
Future performers during the series include the Blue John Folk Singers on Sept. 7, the Scenic City Chorus (photo, right) on Oct. 22, the Prime Time Singers on Nov. 19 and the Mountain Cove Bluegrass on Dec. 17.
Located behind Northgate Mall, the North River Civic Center features educational, recreational and fitness programs for youth, adults and seniors north of the river, and also serves as a meeting place for community groups. Scenic City Chapter of Sweet Adelines (affectionately known as the Scenic City Chorus) performs Oct. 22. Chartered in 1962, the non-profit corporation have filled the Scenic City with a cappella harmony for 48 years.
Director Jennifer Cooke, a long-time a member of Sweet Adelines, grew up singing barbershop music with her family quartet. A four-time Region 23 quartet champion, Jennifer is a member of the Tune Town Show Chorus and serves as a lead section leader.
Scenic City members hail from every corner of the greater Chattanooga area and continues to welcome talented members. Audition is required. Scenic City meets at Burks United Methodist Church, 6433 Hixson Pike, every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Visit, watch a rehearsal and consider joining. Learn more at the group's website, below.

Bethany Seeking Families to Help Protect Area Children
CHATTANOOGA, TN — Bethany of Greater Chattanooga has a new ministry opportunity for Christian families to show the love and compassion of Christ to families in our community that are facing various crises. The ministry is called Safe Families for Children. We are looking for host families who will provide parents a short term, safe, protective place for their children in times of crisis.
With the changing economy, thousands of families are facing job loss or financial crisis that can lead to housing loss. Others are dealing with illness, lack of social or family support, unpreparedness for parenting, substance abuse or incarceration. During such crises, many parents are in jeopardy of not being able to provide a safe and stable environment for their children, who can be especially at risk as parents struggle to cope with their circumstances and emotions. Without assistance, some of these situations will lead to abuse and neglect....

For 32 years, Teen Challenge of the Mid-South has been providing a Christian rehabilitation program to people with life-controlling addictions such as drugs and alcohol. The program is offered at no cost.
